Ramblers FAQ

Where does the club hike?

The club goes to many locations in Southern Arizona and beyond. To see examples of recent hikes, check out the photo section.

Does the club do anything besides hike?

Yes. There a numerous events other than hikes, e.g. backpacking, camping, kayaking, dinners, seminars, nature-related outings, or parties.

Do I need experience?

No, although if you have no hiking experience you should contact the hike organizer and discuss the hike. Some may not be appropriate. You may also request a beginner's hike by posting to the listserv, and someone will probably organize one.

Do I need a car?

No. Transportation is always by carpool, and almost always there are sufficient vehicles to transport everyone. For hikes to more distant locations, carpools will be planned in advance, but for most hikes they are organized at the meeting location.

When does the club meet?

This is covered here.

What are my responsibilities as a hike participant?

Ramblers is a loosely organized club without professional leaders, and as such the primary responsibility for your safety falls to you. You should make sure the hike is within your ability range before attending, by researching the hike online or emailing with the leader. You should bring plenty of water, protection from the sun, and sturdy hiking shoes as the trails are often rocky.

What equipment do I need?

The essentials are sturdy shoes (preferably boots), day pack, water containers, sunscreen, hat. If the hike involves swimming, then a bathing suite and sandals which will stay on in the water are nice. For camping of course you will need more; also see the recommended safety items discussed here.

How much do hikes cost?

Hikes are on an expense-sharing basis, i.e., the costs of gas plus any admission fees are split among the riders in each car. There is no fee to the club itself.

Who can be a member?

The club is open to UA students, staff, and faculty, as well as to members of the community with a strong interest in hiking and a willingness to contribute to the club's activities.

Who can be a club officer?

Only students, graduate or undergraduate.

How can I improve the club, accumulate karma, and make the world a better place?

By planning a hike or other event :-)

How do I post my hike reports to the blog?

Simply email your post to ramblerpix.ramblog -at- blogger.com. Use a fairly large font for the text, and don't post more than 2-3 images, because they will just appear in a long column. If you have many images to show, just include a link to your gallery. Note, posts are reviewed before going live. The subject of the email becomes the title of the post, and the images should be sent as attachments. Don't send an HTML-formatted email with embedded images (it doesn't work)!
